Municipality of Medemblik was the first municipality to launch SimpledCard prepaid payment cards for refugees. It thus found a way to disburse living expenses quickly and easily.
Organising refugee reception often requires a lot from municipalities and participating organisations. Coordinating housing and reception sites, scaling up capacity for registration and securing day-to-day support for those fleeing and families.
Refugees often do not have access to their own bank accounts or struggle to get a new one.
First cards awarded
Mayor Streng and his team handed out the first payment cards today at the town hall in Medemblik. With these, refugees can make their own debit card payments. Each family will receive living expenses on the card every week. This allows refugees to pay for food, drinks and clothes themselves.
Patrick Jousma and Thomas van der Hoek of SimpledCard helped the municipality set up the card system. “It is really heartwarming to see how municipality employees and many volunteers are committed to helping this new group of refugees,” Thomas said.
“We have been working with different municipalities and security regions for years and are happy to be able to do a small part here,” Patrick adds.
Living expenses easier to handle
In a post on the platform Binnenlands Bestuur, municipal secretary Anky Griekspoor previously described how her team deploys the cards and what benefits it brings them in paying living expenses.
Among other things, this identifies the administrative work savings, as the card system can be ‘connected’ to the company's own financial accounts with a software interface.
This makes later accountability to the state easier. Read the full Article “Pin card for Ukrainian refugees” (Domestic Administration).

“Currently we are getting a lot of requests from other municipalities, we try to deal with them as best we can and quickly,” said Patrick Jousma.
