Paying online with a SimpledCard Mastercard payment card is safe and easy. These online payments are secured through 2-factor authentication. This is called 3D secure. This means you easily confirm the online purchase via a mobile app.
Two-factor authentication is increasingly used for online payments. This is governed by the European Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2).
This legislation mandates Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). This means verifying transactions. This is done using two or more of the following elements:

  1. Knowledge: something only the user knows (e.g. password, PIN, ID number)
  2. Ownership: something only the user owns (e.g. mobile device, token, smart card)
  3. Inheritance: something inseparable from the user (e.g. fingerprint, face or voice recognition).

All SimpledCard Mastercard cards are equipped with 3D Secure. When you make an online payment with your card, you approve it in the mobile app or Card Management System (CMS). This happens as soon as you make an online purchase over €35. You will then receive a push notification, after which the verification process starts.
With SimpledCard, you pay online in the same way as with a normal credit card. Besides Mastercard payments, there are several other online payment methods.
Let's take a look at the most commonly used online methods. And how to make sure online payments are secure.

Online payment methods

Internet banking and other online payment methods come in many shapes and sizes. When you order something online, you are directed to the webshop's payment page. There you choose from the various payment methods.
The most common online payment methods are credit card, PayPal and iDEAL. In the Netherlands 70% of all online purchases made with iDEAL
There is also often the option of deferred payment. You then only have to transfer money after you have received your purchase. The webshop may offer this directly or in the form of a service such as Afterpay or Klarna.

How do you make sure you pay securely online?

Almost 168 million online transactions were made in the Netherlands in 2021. A decrease of 6% compared to 2020. This makes the internet an increasingly attractive market for fraud.
Make sure your computer and internet connection are secure when making online purchases. Always check that your computer or phone's operating system is up-to-date. And, download the latest version of your web browser. Your software will then have the latest security patches. This way, your device is less likely to be targeted by viruses and spyware.
Make sure you have a secure connection if you want to pay online. You can recognise this by the green lock in the browser bar. The web address must start with ‘https://’.
It is also good to teach yourself to check whether the webshop has a quality mark. Examples are Thuiswinkel Waarborg of Webshop Keurmerk. The Consumer Association provides more information on this.
Since January 2021, there has been a new layer of security for transactions. In Europe, strong customer authentication (SCA) is now mandatory in e-commerce. This requirement is defined in the PSD2 regulation.

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is an anti-fraud check that buyers must perform for certain card payments: the 3D secure protocol. This security check is called “Mastercard SecureCode” or “Verified by Visa”. All SimpledCard payment cards use SecureCode.
The name 3D comes from the three-domain model. 3D secure provides a secure authentication layer between financial authorisation process and the online authentication process. The three domains are the acquirer, the issuer and the interoperability domain. The latter is Mastercard's service.
SecureCode is a secret code for your payment card. This code provides extra security for online purchases. Only you and your bank know this code. The code remains invisible to merchants. SecureCode works with your existing Mastercard cards.
More than a million online shops in 122 countries support transactions with SecureCode. And it is easy to activate and use.

What's new for SimpledCard cards?

We have implemented 3D Secure for all our Mastercard cards. This makes online payments with our cards even more secure. Do you make an online purchase with one of our cards? Then you need to confirm the payment in the mobile app or CMS.
As a Mastercard cardholder, your budget allows you to make online purchases on trusted websites. It then doesn't matter whether you work in the office or remotely. This way, you make sure all your work gets done, no matter where you are.

How do you pay online?

Do you use a Mastercard card in a webshop? Then follow the normal steps of a credit card payment.
One of the features of SimpledCard card is the 16-digit number. You use this “PAN” number to complete an order online.
You place an order, just like you are used to at a web shop. You select ‘Pay by credit card’ as your preferred option. You then enter the card number, expiry date and CVC code.
Then go through the 3D Secure process as explained below.
Is the balance sufficient? Then the amount will be debited from the SimpledCard account. The webshop is then informed that the order has been paid.
3D Secure - How it works:

  1. You will receive a push notification on your phone when the payment is completed.
  2. Open the SimpledCard app and go to tasks.
  3. Click on payment in progress and check that everything is correct.
  4. Once ticked, click approve. The payment is now complete. Of course, if you think the payment is incorrect, click reject.
