The burden of registration and redundant administration in healthcare has increased in recent years. So says nearly 90% of the 700 nurses and carers surveyed in a research From the NOS and V&VN. Nurses and carers are autonomous professionals who are quite capable of working with colleagues to determine what kind of care a patient or client needs.
Administration gone mad
Recently in de Volkskrant That the 350,000 carers and nurses in the Netherlands should be given the position they deserve.
Care workers face all kinds of obstacles to practising their profession, such as staff shortages and high workloads, as well as a huge administrative burden.
The administration burden among district nurses is particularly high. Of the six healthcare groups surveyed, it was found that on average 39.15% of the time up on administration.
District nurses spend 48.8% of time on administration, which includes maintaining client records, scheduling and rostering colleagues, communicating with (family of) clients, keeping track of working hours and, of course, business expenses for necessary team and client purchases at the healthcare facility's expense.
Top frustrations healthcare professionals have with business spending (Source: SimpledCard 2018)
- Tracking team expenses and necessary expenses for clients in a cash book
- Lost receipts and late accountability
- Taking care of cash
- Shortage of funds at end of month
- Non-performing cash at the end of the month
More efficient administration
Late last year, the Netherlands Institute for Healthcare Research published the result of a questionnaire survey. This showed that healthcare providers on average 10.5 hours per week spend on overall administration and 64% of them think the administrative burden is too high.
They simply do not take into account the fact that nurses are not administratively trained and prefer to focus on patient and client care.
This bloated administration, as Kersten calls it, costs care staff an hour a day on average. Interviews with SimpledCard clients show that many care staff also find administering business expenses a major burden.
This eventually accumulates with the person in charge of the finance department. Administering these business expenses costs care staff two hours a week, according to a SimpledCard interview with a large care institution.
However, since the implementation of SimpledCard, the care staff of this healthcare institution has only spent half an hour accounting for expenses instead of two hours. In the process, the petty cash, all cash and corporate credit cards have been replaced by SimpledCard debit cards.
