Declaring school supplies can be much easier
“Teachers are pulling the purse strings en masse”. Two years ago, Het Onderwijsblad reported on the results of a survey of primary education employees.
Some 600 teachers, teaching assistants and caretakers were asked about their purchases for school. Besides being noteworthy that some of those surveyed indicated that they do not claim the expenses incurred at all, it is notable that if they do claim school supplies, it is done in a rather old-fashioned way. Two years on, little has changed.
“There are two envelopes here: in the parent council's envelope I put receipts for things I spend directly on the pupils, which can be up to 25 euros. And in the school envelope I put the more general receipts - up to and including receipts for plasters and scouring pads. That can go up to 75 euros,” says Miss Jansze from Lisse. She goes on to say that purchases for school often come on a voucher with private purchases. In that case, teacher Janzse underlines all purchases made for school. You can imagine that quite a lot of time goes into this way of claiming expenses.
Teachers dare not declare school supplies
What a godsend it would be if teachers like teacher Jansze had a debit card from school to purchase pencils, glue, pencil sharpeners, stickers and books.
The school determines the budget and each class gets a pass. It would not only save primary school staff a lot of time, but also money. After all, a third of those surveyed pay all expenses entirely from their own pockets.
According to the General Education Union (AOb), many teachers feel guilty when they have to declare money because schools are tight on cash.
